When Dr. Fred Luskin from the Stanford University was recently interviewed for an article in Psychology Today, he described how “difficult experiences can create mental grooves that become very challenging to replace.” He went on to say, “Forgiveness is one of the names we give to replacing those grooves of negativity, and the ability to do this is one of the keys to mental health.”

As family caregivers, we may be feeling distressed or disappointed about past events that we’ve gone through with the person we’re looking after. Luskin explains how to reframe the way we view past hurts, and he lays out four helpful principles for practising forgiveness.
